Norwegian Government and ECLAC Sign Cooperation Agreement to Promote Equality

On June 6th, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) held a seminar in Oslo presenting the ECLAC-reports Time for Equality and Structural Change for Equality.

The reports are focusing on the general improvement in levels of extreme poverty in Latin-America the last decades. They are a result of pioneering research to detect reasons for this change and how to ensure sustainability in this development. Worth reading for getting an update on conteporary debates,  important issues and tendencies related to economic and political change in Latin-America.

As she was visiting Oslo, she also signed an cooperation agreement with the Norwegian Government to promote equality. This might be an important step towards perceiveng cooperation between Norway and Latin-America (including Brazil) in a wide context, incorporating social policy, industrial policy, labor market policies and education- and innovation policies, to name a few. Given the wide scope of the agreement, I hope this will also lead to some focus on research related to health, social security and welfare.
